Must I have my extinguishers serviced? If you already have extinguishers, BS5306-3 2009 states they should be serviced at least annually. This becomes even more critical if you have people sleeping on your business premises such as an HMO (House in Multiple Occupancy) or Residential/Nursing Home.
In essence, businesses are expected to provide their employees and customers with a safe environment. If a fire occurred and loss of life or injury resulted, then suddenly, proving you have complied with BS5306, takes on a whole new importance from a legal viewpoint. Failure to comply could mean faulty extinguishers resulting in a fire fatality and for you a period in one of Her Majesty’s own residential homes!
But I haven’t used them! We often hear this but powder in extinguishers can deteriorate over time, pressure to discharge the extinguisher can drop from leaks, gauges may become faulty and dropping/hitting extinguishers can also cause damage. Updating may be warranted e.g. over recent years plastic head caps are being replaced by metal since plastic can degrade and become brittle over time. Often extinguishers are found to have been used yet hung back on their bracket – sometimes in an attempt to disguise practical jokes from discharging them at other staff. Even humble fire blankets can become contaminated with cooking oil over years in e.g. kitchens. That is even whilst they remain in their enclosures.
